On the occasion of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP17), the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a site visit to a community-based mitigation project in the nearby province of Richmond which is helping local communities increase their access to sustainable energy.

On-the-ground efforts to save the tiger have been given a major boost from SOS (Save Our Species) — a global conservation fund implemented by IUCN, the World Bank and GEF  — the project will improve enforcement effectiveness in protecting and recovering tiger breeding populations and therefore addressing the biggest threat to wild tigers: poaching.

Washington DC, November 21, 2011 - Last week, Dr. Francisco Barnes, President, and Dr. Julia Martinez, Coordinator of the Climate Change Program, of the National Institute of Ecology of Mexico (INE) met with the GEF CEO Monique Barbut and the GEF Climate Mitigation and Adaptation personnel to explore potential partnerships to facilitate climate technology transfer.

South Africa will host the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP17) from November 28th to December 9th, 2011. As this global event is held in the City of Durban (eThekwini Municipality), the Government of South Africa and Global Environment Facility (GEF) are taking the opportunity to demonstrate South Africa's strong commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) administered by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) is providing $5.5 million to fund the technical and regulatory work needed to develop catastrophe and weather-risk insurance markets and mitigate the negative impact of climate change in Albania, FYR Macedonia, and Serbia, through the project ‘”. The World Bank is the implementing partner of the project, and Europa Re, a catastrophe and weather risk insurance facility, is the executing agency.

In anticipation of the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) 17, in Durban, South Africa, and in the context of the 41st GEF Council Meeting, Ms. Preety Bhandari, Coordinator, and Mr. Yolando Velasco, Officer, of the Financial and Technical Support Programme, of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC), met with the Climate and Chemicals team of the GEF Secretariat.
