March 14, 2011, Washington DC - It is with most heartfelt sorrow that on behalf of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) I offer the Secretariat's deep condolences to the people of Japan especially those who have lost loved ones from the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunamis that have affected the country and the world.

In these times of extreme difficulty, I also wish to express our admiration for the courage and determination of the Japanese people as they work tirelessly to save lives, reunite families, recover material losses and avert further tragedy. They are an inspiration to us all.

Over the GEF's 20 year history Japan has been a steadfast supporter and partner, reaching out whenever help is needed to make the world a better place. Today and every day we stand with the people of Japan as they work to rebuild from the earthquake and tsunamis that are a tragic reminder of the sometimes destructive force of nature.

The GEF is committed to demonstrate concrete solidarity with the international community in its effort to support recovery and reconstruction efforts in Japan and the region.
