March 23, 2010, Island of Djerba, Tunisia

From 12 to 14 March, a group of 25 GEF Small Grants Programme-SGP grantees (NGOs and CBOs) along with UN staff including the Resident Coordinator participated in a Results Based Management (RBM) and Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) training workshop. The training took place in the island of Djerba, South of Tunisia and was organized by the GEF Small Grants Programme and the UN Resident Coordinator office in Tunisia; and facilitated by UN and national civil servants along with the SGP National Coordinator.

During the workshop, the group visited an SGP project that works on environmental conservation in the schools of the island and undertook environmental activities. In particular, during their visit to the primary school of El Groô, the group planted olive trees.

ASSIDJE, an SGP grantee, is the NGO in charge of the preservation of the island of Djerba and has been developing biodiversity gardens in schools using collated raining water from classrooms roofs. Activities are developed by school children with technical assistance provided by SGP grantee as a way to promote environmental awareness in younger generations while preserving their local environment.
