Mr. Nhial Deng Nhial, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, submitted the letter as required in Annex A of the Instrument and communicated that Ambassador Charles Manyang D’Awol, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will be the Political Focal Point and that Mr. David Batali Oliver, Acting Undersecretary at the Ministry of Environment, will be Operational Focal Point.
The Minister also shared information related to the accession of South Sudan to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. South Sudan is in the process of accession to other conventions for which the GEF is the financial mechanism.
South Sudan became the world’s newest country in July 2011, after decades of conflict which imposed a heavy human toll and left it falling far behind in its development. The GEF welcomes South Sudan as its newest Participant and looks forward to working with its authorities to achieve global environmental benefits while supporting its sustainable development objectives.
