Claude Gascon, GEF Interim CEO and Director of Strategy & Operations:
This is an important step forward for the health of the ocean, and reflects the kind of meaningful change that is possible when countries come together in support of global environmental goals and benefits. The Global Environment Facility is part of the financial mechanism of the BBNJ Agreement, supporting the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The support the GEF will provide to developing countries for implementation of this agreement will extend its role as the largest multilateral public funder for the ocean, having invested more than $2.5 billion since 1992.
About the Global Environment Facility
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is the world’s largest multilateral fund for the environment. Its family of funds work together to address the planet's most pressing challenges in an integrated way. Its financing helps developing countries address complex challenges and work towards meeting international environmental goals. Over the past three decades, the GEF has provided more than $27 billion in financing, primarily as grants, and mobilized another $155 billion for country-driven priority projects.
