Lambusango Forest Conservation, Sulawesi
Project Summary
The goal of the projec is to conserve globally-significant biodiversity in Sulawesi through an innovative local management regime and to utilise the lessons learned from this approach to establish similar national/local conservation partnerships in other parts of Indonesia. The key objectives are:1.Maximise local involvement through the establishment of a management ‘Forum’ for the Lambusango Forest Management Area, and the development of village contracts granting exploitation rights in exchange for conservation gains 2.Increase local capacity through awareness building of biodiversity amongst local communities, and the development of technical skills in biodiversity assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate levels amongst the next generation of Indonesian conservationists 3.Develop and implement an effective biological and social assessment programme for performance monitoring4.Ensure the various strands of the project are financially sustainable from government and private sector input by the end of the project.5.Work towards the introduction of similar schemes in three other Districts and promote the concept nationally.
