The project will support Caribbean countries in preparing to cope with adverse effects of climate change, and particularly sea level rise.

This project helps to finance construction of a demonstration geothermal plant to provide hot water to the Klaipeda district heating system, as well as modifications to the heating system to render it compatible with geothermally heated water. It will reduce annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 56,000 tons, and reduce SO2, NOx and TPM emissions significantly too.

This project will target priority ODS-consumption phaseout opportunities in 16 subprojects in the refrigeration, aerosol, foam and solvent sectors, phasing out annual consumption of approximately 2273 tons of ODS, equivalent to 69% of Ukraine's 1994 weighted annual consumption . It also will provide technical assistance in both government and enterprises to facilitate implementation of the ODS Country Program.

This project will phaseout direct annual consumption of at least 806 metric tons of weighted ozone-depleting substance potential, or about 77% of Belarus' 1994 weighted consumption, through phaseout of CFCs in three refrigeration manufacturing and servicing subprojects, and five subprojects in the solvent industry. In addition, it will support a small program in technology transfer and training for the fire protection sector, and a national ODS Phaseout unit.

Project Description (1997) The proposed NPAS project will analyse and apply biological, socio-economic and land-use data to provide a sound basis for designing and implementing a national protected areas system (NPAS).

Preparation of management plans and investment programs for the project 4 protected areas; a social assessment to identify the impacts of PAs on local inhabitants and vice versa, and options for aligning conservation and economic activities, design of a public awareness component; institutional and legal assessments; assessment of training needs; detailed project costing.

To overcome critical financing barriers to investments in energy efficiency (EE) in Hungary and to promote local EE markets and capacity, the project will create an EE co-financing program to facilitate and leverage private sector capital (including domestic bank capital and credit lines with international financial institutions) for EE investments.

PVMTI is a strategic intervention to accelerate the sustainable commercialization and financial viability of PV technology in the developing world, especially for rural electrification. PVMTI will make selected investments in private sector PV market development projects received in response to a competitive solicitation, providing them with appropriately structured concessional financing in the range of $0.5-5 million.

In order to protect the natural resources of Lake Ohrid, like fisheries, and the economic activities associated with the Lake, like tourism, GEF funds will assist the two nations sharing it in: (1) creating an international Lake Ohrid Mgt.

The second of three groups of sub-projects in the GEF-supported Russian ODS Phaseout Program, this project will eliminate annual consumption of approximately 11,438 metric tons of weighted, ozone-depleting substance potential, or about 24% of Russia's 1992 weighted consumption, through (a) replacing CFC aerosol propellant with hydrocarbon aerosol propellant in six aerosol-products enterprises, and (b) replacing CFC with acceptable alternatives in three refrigeration enterprises.
