The objective of the Child Project objective is to strengthen the microfinance ecosystem in South Africa by enabling MFIs to deliver climate-relevant financial products that support inclusive livelihoods, MSME growth, and community participation in the just energy transition, while leveraging the Eskom Just Energy Transition Project (EJETP) and contributing to learning and scale up under the Global Microfinance Initiative. It contributes to the EJETP’s project development objective, which is to (i) decommission the Komati coal-fired power plant, (ii) repurpose the project area with renewables, and (iii) create opportunities for workers and communities during the transition process, with particular relevance to the third objective.
