This proposed project is a targeted-research-project and will investigate techniques for conserving peatland areas to facilitate carbon accumulation while at the same time maintaining or enhancing their biodiversity. The objective of the project will be to address the capability of peatlands to act as significant carbon deposits, and provide recommendations on how these areas could be managed to ensure this attribute is maintained and even improved while protecting biodiversity. An in-depth research on scientific literature will be undertaken,, workshops and targeted discussions held and three case studies conducted: Russia, Indonesia and China. Based on the information gathered, guidance for future management interventions will be developed.
