Juan Pablo Hoffmaister
Juan Pablo Hoffmaister supports vulnerable countries through the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), focusing on financing climate resilience and adaptation strategies.
Prior to joining the Global Environment Facility, he served as Associate Vice President at the Environmental Defense Fund, leading partnership initiatives on climate action priorities including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), finance, and sectoral decarbonization and resilience.
Previously he worked at the Green Climate Fund, where he led initiatives supporting NDCs and National Adaptation Plans while developing complementarity frameworks with other climate funds, supporting strategic relationships, and managed the implementation of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP) guidance on strategic areas.
Juan Pablo brings experience as a former climate negotiator, having served as lead negotiator for the Group of 77 and China on adaptation and vulnerability matters in the lead up to Paris COP21. He also co-chaired the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee and helped launch the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage.
Earlier in his career, Juan Pablo researched climate adaptation governance frameworks and developed country support frameworks integrating climate action with sustainable development at the Stockholm Environment Institute and Third World Network, and as an adviser to the Bolivian Ministry of Planning & Development.
Originally from Costa Rica, Juan Pablo holds an MSc in ecosystems and governance from the Stockholm Resilience Centre, a BA in human ecology from the College of the Atlantic, and a Public Policy Executive Certificate from the Harvard Kennedy School.
