The GEF in Africa
Since its inception in 1991, the Global Environment Facility has steadfastly supported African countries as they seek effective and innovative approaches to a nature-positive economy. The GEF has helped implement more than 1,800 projects in Africa, with a total investment of $6.2 billion. These investments have leveraged over $40 billion from other stakeholders, including governments, bilateral and multilateral partners, the private sector, and civil society organizations.
Chemicals and Waste
The Global Environment Facility is charged with financing the elimination of the most harmful chemicals, which are covered by the Stockholm Convention, the Minamata Convention, and the Montreal Protocol.
Good Practice Brief: Promoting Non-POPs Alternatives to DDT and Environmental Health Through Engaging Key Local Partners
Through the GEF investment, India has taken the first step to eliminate dependency on the insecticide DDT by promoting locally appropriate, cost-effective, and sustainable alternatives, including the Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN) and Neem-based and bacteria-based biopesticides. HIL (India) Limited (HIL), a public sector enterprise, is the only manufacturer of DDT in the world and is committed to phase out production of DDT by 2024.
planetGOLD 2020/2021 Annual Progress Report
This report provides an overview of the progress made by the GEF-funded and UNEP-led planetGOLD program from July 2020 through June 2021, and reviews advances made toward closing financing gaps, supporting formalization of the sector, and connecting miners with mercury-free technology and formal gold markets
As we reflect on the challenges of the past year, the planetGOLD program is also looking forward to significant growth and expansion. The program will soon welcome eight more countries, with seven more anticipated to begin implementation in 2023.
Good Practice Brief: Innovative Governance for Participatory Design of a Green City
“Asuncion Green City of the Americas – Pathways to Sustainability” is one of the GEF investments aiming to support Asuncion’s ambition to become a green and sustainable city. Through an integrated approach, the project seeks to advance integrated land use planning of the Metropolitan Area of Asuncion (AMA), reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation and waste, reduce unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants, and improve protected area management in the AMA.
Good Practice Brief: Finding Solutions for Electronic Waste with the Private Sector and Multi-Stakeholders Engagement
The project connects and operationalizes pre-existing elements of a multi-stakeholder Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system in Nigeria, which is an innovative policy and financial instrument that requires manufacturers, importers, and retailers of electronic products to be physically and financially responsible for the waste management of their products.
planetGOLD 2019/2020 Annual Progress Report
The mission of the planetGOLD program is to make small-scale gold mining safer, cleaner, and more profitable from mine to market—by closing the financing gap, supporting formalization, and connecting miners with mercury-free technology and formal markets.
planetGOLD: Making a world of difference in small-scale gold mining
The planetGOLD program works in partnership with governments, the private sector, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities in nine countries to significantly improve the production practices and work environment of artisanal and small-scale miners. By working to close the financing gap, supporting formalization, and connecting mining communities with mercury-free technology and formal markets, the program aims to demonstrate a pathway to cleaner and more efficient small-scale gold mining practices that benefit everyone, from mine to market.
Plastics and Circular Economy: Community Solutions
This publication captures the GEF Small Grant Programme's (SGP) experiences and lessons learned on plastics management, spanning not only the area of chemical and waste management, but also international waters and biodiversity conservation. The projects focus on implementing a circular economy either through recycling, reducing and reusing plastics for new products, influencing consumer use and behavior, or developing better waste collection and management practices at the community level.
