This annual progress report covers the period from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, providing an update on the Global Environment Facility-supported Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program’s progress and achievements.
The emphasis during this period included strengthening community to accelerate fruitful knowledge exchange across country projects and disseminate insights into how best to initiate private and public sector action on value chains.
The GEF in Africa
Since its inception in 1991, the Global Environment Facility has steadfastly supported African countries as they seek effective and innovative approaches to a nature-positive economy. The GEF has helped implement more than 1,800 projects in Africa, with a total investment of $6.2 billion. These investments have leveraged over $40 billion from other stakeholders, including governments, bilateral and multilateral partners, the private sector, and civil society organizations.
Promoting sustainable land management through evidence-based decision support
This publication is a product of the GEF-funded Food and Agriculture Organization project ‘Decision Support for Mainstreaming and Scaling Out Sustainable Land Management (DS-SLM)’ which has developed a decision support framework (DSF). The DSF integrates experience from work with land degradation and sustainable land management (SLM) into an overall strategy for mainstreaming and scaling out SLM at different spatial and temporal scales.

The Restoration Initiative: 2022 Year in Review
The Restoration Initiative (TRI) unites three Global Environment Facility agencies – the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – to restore degraded landscapes in nine African and Asian countries in support of the Bonn Challenge. Since 2018, this program has been working towards the restoration of mangroves, arid lands and tropical forests in alignment with global goals for climate, biodiversity, and desertification.
Combating Land Degradation
Land is a vital resource to humankind, like air and water. Land degradation - the progressive deterioration or loss of the productive capacity of soils for present and future - is linked to key aspects of human security and well-being: food, jobs, health, and livelihoods.
Desertification - the extreme form of land degradation in drylands - already affects 3.5 billion people, especially rural communities, smallholder farmers, and the very poor.

Local Action on Sustainable Land Management
This GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) publication presents an updated overview of the SGP community-based approach and portfolio in the area of sustainable land management, as part of UNDP's overall related portfolio. Special attention is given to gender and youth, with a spotlight on the innovative partnership with SOS Sahel International, focusing on the Sahel region.
