GEF Council approves $191 million for healthy planet and people
The Global Environment Facility’s governing body has approved $191 million in grants and blended finance to advance climate and nature investments through and after the pandemic.
The funding is the second-to-last tranche to be released under GEF-7, the multilateral fund’s latest four-year funding cycle. It will support initiatives in 43 countries, including 10 Least Developed Countries and 16 small island developing states, that are expected to benefit 25 million local people while generating global environmental gains.
Nine Caribbean countries launch journey towards a chemical-free environment
Nine Caribbean nations have joined forces in the fight for a toxic-free future for the region, with the launch of the $11 million Caribbean ISLANDS project today.
Together, the countries are set to eliminate over 400 tonnes of contaminated material and avoid the release of more than 150,000 tonnes of marine litter.

'Chemicals and waste can harm us and the environment'
As Coordinator of the GEF’s chemicals and waste team, Anil Sookdeo is working to end exposure to toxic pollutants and chemicals that endanger human health and that of the planet. In an interview, he recalled how his first job at an ammonia plant opened his eyes to environmental risks related to chemicals and led to a career focused on preventing accidents, injuries, and damage from their use.
