This presentation of the GEF geographic information system platform was an opportunity to engage on how to enhance impact achievement through geospatial analysis. Rapid advances on geospatial data are transforming the way countries plan and report on environmental results. Access to satellite imagery has become more available to all and agencies are routinely tracking the geographic location of investments. To support this move, the GEF has located 10,000+ activities from over 1,000 projects and is now making them available through the GEF Geospatial Platform launched at the 7th GEF Assembly.

Realizing the full benefits of geocoding environmental finance data requires moving beyond a cartographic exercise to thinking about how geospatial data can feed into the design and implementation of interventions supporting environmental goals. That’s why the GEF Geospatial Platform allows countries and agencies to design interventions informed by context-specific data, while providing stakeholders with a better understanding of the impact of project activities on the environment.
