Social media has flattened the information landscape, allowing more communities to have access to information and increasingly more voices to be heard, especially youth from the global South.
Connect4Climate, the global online community that cares about climate change, hosts a session bringing together social media experts, journalists, academics and other communicators to debate how best to engage the widest audience from all corners of the world and raise the bar on climate change discourse and action.
With more than a quarter million followers, Connect4Climate shows that young people everywhere are hungry for information and eager to get involved.
How can this online energy and engagement be put to best use? How can we leverage the tools available to harness more collective intelligence? What is the role of citizen journalism? How can local climate experiences best contribute to global change?

Paul Sparrow
Senior Vice President, Newseum
Paul Sparrow is the Senior Vice President for Broadcasting and Media at the Newseum, the interactive museum of news. He oversees the Newseum’s Web site, social networks, interactive exhibits and video production, including “The Future of News” a ten-part series for public television. He is leading the development of a New Media gallery that will focus on the impact of technology on journalism. Sparrow came to the Newseum in 1999 from the Discovery Channel. He also worked as an executive producer for The Learning Channel, Fox and public television. He began his television career at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco. An Emmy-Award winning television producer, he created more than 300 hours of prime-time programming, syndicated news shows, and more than a dozen documentaries and network specials.

Andrew Steer
Special Envoy for Climate Change, World Bank
Dr. Steer became Special Envoy for Climate Change at the World Bank in July 2010. As such, he is responsible for guiding the Bank Group's work on climate change (now in over 130 countries), and for advancing a strong pro-development climate agenda internationally. In his post, which ranks at the level of Vice President, he will also oversee the $6.5 billion dollar Climate Investment Funds and help mobilize climate financing.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Steer served for three years as Director General, Policy and Research at the UK Department of International Development (DFID) in London. In earlier years, he held a number of positions at the World Bank including Country Director for Indonesia and Vietnam, and Director of the Environmental Department. He was also Staff Director of the 1992 World Development Report on Environment and Development, the Bank’s Flagship report to the Rio Earth Summit.
Dr. Steer has three decades of experience working on development issues at the country level in Africa and Asia, and on global development issues. He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, has written widely on development issues and has taught Economics at several universities.
In August 2012, Dr. Steer will assume the post of President of the World Resources Institute.
Tara Grumm
Senior Marketing Manager, Microsoft
Is the senior marketing manager for corporate citizenship at Microsoft – producing and driving its digital strategy. As part of this strategy, Tara owns social media for CSR at Microsoft and has grown audience reach through data-driven marketing tactics. She is responsible for producing and managing the Microsoft Local Impact Map, a rich Internet platform, built on Azure with Bing Maps, and containing over 1,700 stories showcasing community impact around the world and has been named an honoree for the 16th annual Webby Awards. Prior to joining Microsoft, she oversaw digital Web production for companies such as FOX.com (20th Century Fox), Noble House Hotels, Brown-Forman, and RealNetworks.
Tara serves on the board of MayaWorks, a fair trade nonprofit promoting economic development for Maya women and is part of the digital steering committee for Washington STEM to help advance innovation and excellence in science, technology, engineering, and math studies.
Joydeep Gupta
Director, Third Pole Project - Internews
Is the Director of the Third Pole Project run jointly by chinadialogue and the Internews Earth Journalism Network. He is also the Secretary of the Forum of Environmental Journalists in India. He writes on climate change, biodiversity, pollution and sustainable development. He trains environmental journalists and has been lead trainer at workshops for environmental journalists from South Asia and South-East Asia in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Philippines Joydeep also teaches Development Journalism to postgraduate students at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi. He has also co-authored studies on green technology transfer for UNCTAD and on water pollution from steel factories for the Confederation of Indian Industry. For his contributions to environmental journalism, Joydeep won the 2012 Green Globe Award at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit organized by The Energy and Resources Institute.

Adjunct Professor, New York University
Liz Ngonzi is an international speaker, educator & entrepreneur, who bring a multitude of perspectives to address audiences worldwide. She develops key note addresses, seminars & training programs drawing on her: 20+ years of professional experience advising corporations, nonprofit organizations & entrepreneurs on how to more effectively engage customers / supporters improve service delivery and build brands. Life-long exposure to various cultures garnered as a daughter of a diplomat, 13 years at the UN International School and global travel from infancy. Seven years of lecturing & curriculum development experience, including at Cornell University and New York University.
Rami Khater
Senior New Media Producer, Al Jazeera
Rami Khater is the Senior New Media Producer for Al Jazeera English’s The Stream, a social media community with its own daily television program. On television and online The Stream taps into the extraordinary potential of social media to disseminate news. The Stream is an aggregator of online sources and discussion, seeking out unheard voices, new perspectives from people on the ground and untold angles related to the most compelling stories of the day. In his role as Senior New Media Producer, Rami oversees social media elements of the show, sources stories from Twitter, Facebook, and other outlets, and continuously engages with The Stream’s online community.
