The Project Development Objective of the Sustainable Development in Poor Rural Areas Project (SDPRAP) is to explore and pilot more effective and innovative ways of providing poverty reduction assistance to the poorest communities and households through CDD and participatory approaches. By bringing project funding down to the community level and enabling communities and households to determine the use of those funds, the Project will help resolve the problems of: (a) only a limited portion of available poverty reduction funding reaching the local level and (b) institutional priorities and administrative constraints predetermining what poverty reduction activities actually take place at the local level. The Global Environment Objective of the Project is to demonstrate–under the Sustainable Land Management and Adaptation component (SLMA)–improved sustainable land management through innovative community pilots addressing vulnerability to climate change in poor rural areas for introduction and mainstreaming into the project’s Community-driven Development (CDD) approach.
