GEF-8 - Accelerating towards a pollution-free planet
The proposal for programming during GEF-8 consists of five focal area strategies complimented by 11 integrated programs (IPs) to holistically address environmental threats and complex problems in cities, food, the ocean, forests, and supply chains.
Several IPs and focal areas, including the chemicals and waste focal area will address the priorities of the chemicals and waste conventions, including the Stockholm Convention, with the overall aim of reducing pollution and achieving zero waste.
In the context of the implementation of the chemicals and waste conventions, this panel discussion explored how GEF-8 sets the stage to transition to a pollution-free planet.
Global launch of the ISLANDS program
The ISLANDS Program, led by the United Nations Environment Programme and funded by the GEF, to support Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) in reducing chemicals and waste pollution, was launched at a high-level event on June 7.
At the launch, experts from the public and private sector discussed SIDS sustainability through innovation, trade, finance, and investment. With the shipping and tourism industry, ISLANDS countries will have the opportunity to catalyze significant progress towards sustainable solutions to chemicals and waste management.
June 1: High-level Segment
The objective of the High-level Segment on June 1, 2022 is to provide an interactive platform for ministers and other high-level delegates to exchange experiences and to show political leadership for renewed commitment towards the implementation of the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions. The High-level Segment aims to raise political awareness of and support for the Conventions, as well as promote a dialogue.
Under the theme “Global Agreements for a Healthy Planet: Sound management of chemicals and waste” the High-level Segment will address how the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions contribute to tackle the triple planetary environmental crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution.
