On June 21, 2022, twenty-nine donor governments finalized $5.33 billion in pledges to the Global Environment Facility for the next four years, an increase of more than 30 percent from its last operating period and a surge of support for international efforts to meet nature and climate targets.

The record funding will support large-scale initiatives to address biodiversity and forest loss, improve ocean health, combat pollution, and reduce the effects of climate change within the decade. It reflects a growing consensus on the need to expand efforts in these areas and to work across borders and sectors.

Integrated Program Briefs

Much of the funding will be delivered through a set of 11 integrated programs (IPs) that address multiple environmental threats at once. A set of information briefs highlight the issue, integrated solutions, and expected outcomes for each program. Read the Integrated Program briefs >>

Replenishment Meetings

At its 59th meeting in December 2020, the GEF Council requested the Trustee, in cooperation with the Secretariat, to initiate discussions for the eighth replenishment of resources for the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-8).

The replenishment meetings provide an opportunity for contributing participants to review GEF performance and evaluate progress, assess future funding needs, and agree on a financing framework.

Participants

The following entities are invited to the meetings as observers: five representatives from non-donor recipient countries representing Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe/Central Asia, Latin America, and the Small Island Developing States (SIDS); two non-governmental organization/civil society organization representatives - one representing a donor country-based NGO/CSO and another representing a recipient country; one representative of the private sector; one representative from the Green Climate Fund Secretariat; and one representative from the Adaptation Fund Secretariat. In addition, representatives of GEF agencies and the conventions for which the GEF serves as a financial mechanism are invited to attend the meetings as observers. Comments are solicited from GEF Council members on policy and programming documents prepared for replenishment discussions.
