The Global Clean Hydrogen Programme (GCHP) addresses the critical need for reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as chemicals, iron, steel, and heavy transport, which contribute around 20% of annual CO2 emissions globally. Aligned with the Paris Agreement of limiting warming to 1.5°C, the programme promotes clean hydrogen technologies to help decarbonize industries and heavy transport in developing countries and economies where emissions could to rise by 20% by 2040 under a business-as-usual scenario.
The objective of the GCHP is to accelerate the production and application of clean hydrogen in developing countries, focusing on the industrial and transport sectors. By promoting transformative and innovative approaches, the GCHP aims to overcome barriers such as inadequate regulatory frameworks, financing gaps, and limited technical expertise in developing countries. This will support their transition towards net-zero emissions, while fostering industrial growth, enhancing energy security, and promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
