Combating Land Degradation
Land is a vital resource to humankind, like air and water. Land degradation - the progressive deterioration or loss of the productive capacity of soils for present and future - is linked to key aspects of human security and well-being: food, jobs, health, and livelihoods.
Desertification - the extreme form of land degradation in drylands - already affects 3.5 billion people, especially rural communities, smallholder farmers, and the very poor.

This GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) publication presents an updated overview of the SGP community-based approach and portfolio in the area of sustainable land management, as part of UNDP's overall related portfolio. Special attention is given to gender and youth, with a spotlight on the innovative partnership with SOS Sahel International, focusing on the Sahel region.
Voices from the land: Restoring soil and enriching lives

Today, with a quarter of our land already degraded and almost half the global population directly affected by land degradation, we are losing this precious resource at a time when we can least afford the social, economic or environmental impacts of this loss.
