Momentum builds for larger and broader GEF support
The Global Environment Facility’s member countries are approaching broad consensus about expanding the size and scope of its support over the next four years.
Meeting virtually, representatives of the multilateral fund’s donor governments found significant common ground on proposed policies and programming priorities for the GEF-8 funding period, which covers the period from July 2022 to June 2026.
Good Practice Brief: Enhancing Engagement of Private Sector and Local Communities on Peatland Management
Indonesia has approximately 25 million hectares of peatlands, which provide unique ecosystem services and a source of livelihood to rural populations. Peatlands in Indonesia store an estimated 46 gigatons of carbon equivalent to approximately 8-14 percent of all global soil carbon. Despite the local and global importance of these ecosystems, they face a growing number of threats, including logging; agricultural conversion by smallholder farmers and large private sector plantations; fires; and drainage of peatlands.
New program to transform global food systems across key commodities in 27 countries
At an event at COP26 in Glasgow, a new $345 million, seven-year program, The Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration Impact Program (FOLUR), will launch projects in 27 countries, targeting the production and value chains of eight key commodities: beef, cocoa, coffee, maize, palm oil, rice, soy, and wheat. FOLUR aims to transform global food and land use systems through a Global Platform and 27 country projects that restore degraded landscapes and intensify sustainable land management practices.
Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration Impact Program
Under the seventh GEF replenishment, GEF-7, Impact Programs (IPs) on Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR); Sustainable Forest Management (SFM); and Sustainable Cities are being developed to address the drivers of environmental degradation, and to support transformational change in these key systems.
Governments meet to consider high-ambition GEF replenishment
Representatives of the GEF’s member governments gathered virtually Sept. 29 - Oct. 1, 2021, to review proposed plans for the multilateral trust fund in its eighth funding cycle. Donor support for the GEF helps developing countries meet international environmental obligations and advance progress toward global goals on biodiversity, climate change, harmful chemicals, and more.
Why the GEF is investing in transforming food systems
You may be aware that food plays an important role in human health. Did you know it is also critical to the health of our planet?
Food systems are major drivers of global forest and biodiversity loss, land and soil degradation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
